Day of Action for Maryland Youth Justice

Maryland State
Lawyer's Mall
100 State Cir, Annapolis, MD

Every child must be treated with dignity, respect, and fairness. Join JUFJ and our partners in the Maryland Youth Justice Coalition for a day of action in Annapolis in support of the YES Act! We'll be gathering outdoors in the morning with the coalition, and then joining the bill's committee hearing in the afternoon. Come to either (or both!) and submit testimony for the hearing even if you can't come to Annapolis in person.

Annapolis Purim Action

Maryland State
Lawyer's Mall
100 State Cir, Annapolis, MD

Every year on (or near) Purim, JUFJ activists deliver mishloach manot, sweet gifts to our legislators, along with a reminder of our legislative priorities. We invite you to make or buy hamentaschen or other supplies to support this effort even if you aren't able to join us in person!

MD Court and Prison Reform Hearing/Watch Party: Support HB96

Maryland State
Lowe House Office Building
6 Bladen St, Annapolis, MD

The Torah commands us to pursue justice, and our sages instruct us that the methods we use to do so must be just themselves. The practice of automatically charging youths as adults in Maryland is unjust, ineffective and disproportionally targets Black and brown youth. Join us in Annapolis or on Zoom for the House Judiciary Committee hearing on HB96, the Youth Equity and Safety Act, which would put an end to the racist practice of autocharge.

MD Court and Prison Reform Senate Hearing: Funding for Women’s Prerelease Facility

Maryland State
Miller Senate Office Building
11 Bladen St, Annapolis, MD

JUFJ is guided by the Jewish concept of tzelem elohim, which teaches that all people are created in the Divine image, with inherent and equal dignity and value. Prerelease programs help people nearing the end of their prison sentences secure employment, housing, drug treatment, mental health services, and family support. There are multiple facilities for men in Maryland, but none for women. Join us in Annapolis (or tune in on your own virtually) for the Senate Capital Budget Subcommittee's budget hearing to advocate that the funding we won last year (but was struck from the FY24 budget) be put back in the budget and that the women's prerelease facility be fully funded to avoid any further delays in implementation.

Maryland Youth Justice Working Group Meeting

Maryland State

Jewish sacred texts teach us that the world was created with both justice and mercy. Here in Maryland, children who are charged with certain crimes are sentenced as if they were adults. That is neither just nor merciful. Join JUFJ's youth justice working group as we discuss the campaign to pass the Youth Equity and Safety (YES) Act.

Tzedek Tzedek Tirdof: A JUFJ House Meeting

Baltimore

Our Torah commitments bring us to care for our families, HaShem and the Jewish community. They also bring us to care for the greater community in which we all live. That caring leads us not only to engage in individual acts of chesed, but to work to make communal change that benefits everyone. Join JUFJ to meet with other members of the Orthodox Jewish community who share these values.
